Straight answer: the version everyone knew ended. The federal credit for buying your own system expired on December 31, 2025. If a sales pitch still promises it, that pitch is out of date.
But federal solar incentives did not disappear. They changed shape. Companies that own and operate solar systems can still earn them, under rules with names like safe harbor and energy communities. A solar lease or a power-purchase plan is exactly that: a partner company owns the system on your roof, you simply pay for the power, and those incentives are still in play. That also means homes that never owed enough in taxes to use the old credit anyway can benefit now too. Done right, it shows up where you can actually feel it: in your monthly number.
